Top Newspapers Headlines for February 8

The country’s top newspapers focused on the continued war between Deputy President William Ruto and the Orange Democratic Party Leader Raila Odinga concerning the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) bill.

The dailies also reported on the misery the former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko is facing. In the newspapers also is the continued plan to impeach Deputy President William Ruto.

The daily reports that investigations have been started by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to understand how Mike Sonko ‘died’ and escaped from Shimo La Tewa prison 20 years ago.

A death certificate with Sonko’s name brought confused many who did not understand how he managed to fake his death while in prison.

The certificate indicates that Kioko Gideon Mbuvi died from cardiopulmonary arrest.

In 1998 Kioko Gideon Mbuvi was found guilty by a court of law and was jailed for 12 months at Shimo La Tewa and changed his name to Mike Sonko in 2012.

Sleuths being led by George Kinoti said that they are investigating Sonko’s involvement in the chaos that the run up to 2017 general elections.



Sonko further mentioned Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho’s revealing that he was part of government officials who planned violence.

Raila Odinga who is in the spirit of drumming up support for BBI is from today expected to hold a meeting with delegates from four Nyanza counties.

Raila’s handshake friend President Uhuru Kenyatta had previously met with over 5000 delegates from the Mount Kenya region pushing for the support of BBI.

Raila’s move follows as more County assemblies are expected to pass the bill this week.

The opposition leader has not yet left DP Ruto aside for opposing the BBI.

Ruto has continued pushing for a multiple choice referendum which Raila says it’s a cowardly move and not viable.

Also in the daily, Lugari Member of Parliament Ayub Savula revealed that the impeachment of DP Ruto will kick off today begining with collection of signatures from MP’s.

The daily wrote about how a clinical officer with fake credentials worked for eight years at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is searching for the suspect who is said to have been using a registration number for a doctor in West Pokot.

The man was brought to book after he performed an operation at a patient who later died.

Reports indicate that another patient whom he operated on is in a worse condition.

The man was not in good terms with Kenya Union of Clinical Officers for working during the time they were on strike.

The country’s top newspaper raised a question to the government on whether it’s time to end the curfew or not.

The daily reported that all the covid-19 rules set by the government are not even observed having political rallies taking place even after Uhuru banned them.

Due to the recent development business owners find it unfair because it is ironic having curfew and the disease between 10pm to 4am.

In a separate story, the Jubilee Secretary General Raphael Tuju has trashed claims that there is a plot to impeach Deputy President William Ruto.
“So far, those are just speculations. There is no such motion. It has not been discussed within the party. If there was such a discussion, it would have been communicated to all members,” said Tuju.
