Aggrey Awori died on Monday, July 5, after a month-long illness, his close friend pointing at pressure as the cause of the death.
"He has been sick for about a month and I have been in touch with him until today when his wife, Thelma told me that he had died," said Peter Oguttu, one of Aggrey's closest friends.
Oguttu stated COVID-19 might have been another cause, given the deceased had other underlying conditions. "You know what's currently going on in the country, but he's been having pressure and other diseases as well," said Oguttu.

Aggrey was born in 1939 in Budimo Village, Busia county.
He was born to a well-to-do family, being the 10th of 17 children. His parents were Canon Jeremiah Musungu Awori, a pioneer African priest of the Anglican Church in East Africa and Mariamu Odongo Awori, a nurse and community teacher.
Among Aggrey's siblings are Arthur Moody Awori, Kenya's one-time vice president, Grace Wakhungu and Mary Okelo, the first woman in East Africa to head a Barclays Bank branch. Mary is also the founder of the Kenya Women Finance Trust (KWFT), Kenya's women-only bank. The elitist Makini Schools' chain is also her brainchild.

Wakhungu was charged in 2020 after she allegedly colluded with others to fleece the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) millions of shillings. Aggrey had served in the Ugandan government as the Minister for Information and Communications Technology from February 16, 2009, to May 27, 2011.

The deceased also served in Uganda's sixth parliament. He was an alumnus of the prestigious Harvard University.
Aggrey also taught political journalism at the University of Nairobi.
