The move by the government to stop Deputy President William Ruto from traveling to the neighbouring country Uganda on Monday has elicited mixed reactions from Kenyans.

Ruto was scheduled to leave the country on midday, only to be delayed for about five hours over clearance issues.
Politicians allied to the DP have said that the step claimed that step was meant to frustrate and intimidate Ruto when his travel was personal, which should not have been a big issue.
According to the government’s protocols, any member of the cabinet seeking to travel out of the country has to be approved by the State House.

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro who was among the legislators to accompany the DP said that they were able to be cleared by the Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi without any issue.

However, Nyoro said that the DP arrived at the airport for clearance at 1pm but was not cleared even after being patient for five hours waiting.
He added that after waiting, they contacted the Immigration Department for a way forward, only to be told by the Immigration officer that “there were orders from above”.

“Immigration officer told us that he has received orders from above for them not clear the DP, that he needed some clearance, we asked them from where and no one was able to explain which source we should seek the clearance.”

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen said that the Deputy President has never ever required any clearance to travel out of the country.
Murkomen added that there is no law or regulation requiring the DP to seek clearance before travel for any public or private engagement.
Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga condemned the move, saying that it was the extent the deep state can go to frustrate the DP.

On the other hand, lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi said that it was okay for the government to stop the DP from traveling, adding that Ruto should stay in Kenya to concentrate on his 2022 presidential campaign.

“On this, I agree with Uhuru hundred per cent. Ruto's votes are in Kenya and he has just 11 months as DP!”
