& the first to permanently BAN slavery.
It is also the only nation whose independence was gained as part of a successful slave rebellion. The fight for freedom started w/ (1/2)
the Haitian Revolution, a 13 year war in which Haiti fought/defeated France, Britain, & Spain. The Revolution was also INSTRUMENTAL in ending the transatlantic slave trade. After independence in Haiti, Britain stopped trading enslaved people in 1807 & abolished slavery in 1833
