A section of Nairobi residents were captured on camera celebrating in the Central Business District (CBD) immediately President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that the cessation of movement in and out of Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos, Kiambu and Nakuru, had been lifted.

In a short video the Nairobi residents could be seen shouting and celebrating on the streets in excitement.

"I have seen a huge gathering people shouting and whistling here in the city and was not sure what is happening. At first I thought it is riots or protests only to realize it is people celebrating the lifting of cessation of movement in the zoned area," Keyym Peters, a netizen stated as he shared the video.

The president also lifted the ban of the closure of restaurants and bars. Hotels, restaurants and eateries will now operate till curfew.

The announcements were met by reactions from Kenyans and a section of leaders who took to social media pages to air their views.
"The next lockdown will depend on our acts or omissions. Let’s be patriotic," Makueni senator Mutula Kilonzo said.

"Alhamdulillah we can now pray in our mosques. Allah is Great," politician Billow Kerrow expressed.
On the other hand, Elgeyo Marakwet senator Kipchumba Murkomen, a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto, alluded that the lifting of cessation of movement and relaxation of Covid-19 rules was due to the soon to be held BBI referendum.

Early in the day, a section of Nairobi residents had taken to the streets to protest among other issues, the directive on cessation of movement ordered by the president in March 26, 2021.

Part of the issues they want to be addressed includes; lifting of the partial lockdown and dusk to dawn curfew, provision of food for everyone, an immediate end to police killings and brutality and state repression.

Others included; access to free and quality healthcare, provision of clean water, decent housing, equitable access to jobs, free education, an immediate end to gender based violence and others.
