The country’s top newspapers focused on the continued wrangles in Jubilee as well as the Council of Governors Chairman election for next week.

One of the dailies also reported on calls by senior Jubilee officials to have Deputy President William Ruto expelled for launching in another party; United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

The Independent, Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was under pressure on Thursday, January 21 after the names of President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga were missing in the list of 3.1 million signatures verified by the commission.

The two were the first Kenyans to amend their signatures in support of the document on November 25, 2020 at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC).

Council of Governors chairman Wycliffe Oparanya’s tenure is set to come to an end with elections to replace him slated for January 29.

According to the council’s chief executive officer Jacqueline Omogeni, the council will have a consensus but if it fails then they will proceed to vote.

Along those who have expressed interest in the seat include Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu), Kivutha Kibwana (Makueni), Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga) and Salim Mvurya (Kwale).

Senior Jubilee officials have called for Deputy President William Ruto’s expulsion from the party for launching the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) recently.

Deapite being part of the Jubilee coalition, Jubilee Chairman David Murathe said but it was illegal for the party to field candidates against the position of the ruling party.

“Those leaders including the DP who are pushing the UDA agenda will lose their seats. Things are cooking. Just wait,” Murathe confidently said.
“When a party that is supposed to be a coalition partner fields candidates against our people, its members cannot claim to be part of us. May be it’s time to revisit the coalition agreement,” he added.

ODM is set to invite applications from candidates seeking a presidential ticket as the 2022 General Elections inches closer.

This comes even after ODM Chairman John Mbadi confirmed that ODM leader Raila Odinga will compete for the top seat come 2022.
