Shock of newlyweds forced to spend wedding night out in cold, in a stadium
A couple in Rwanda will never forget their D-Day, not that it was filled with contagious happy moments, but because of what they were treated to on their wedding night.
Just when the wedding was about to conclude in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, police stormed the once-in-a-lifetime event and brought it to an abrupt end.
The couple and the family members from both sides present were bundled into a police vehicle and ferried to a nearby stadium. Not even the presiding man of God was spared.
That was when it donned on them that they were arrested for flouting COVID-19 measures put in place by the no-nonsense President Paul Kagame’s government, to curb the spread of coronavirus in the landlocked country.
The punishment for that, wait for it… they were to spend the night on the football pitch, to serve as a lesson for any other Rwandese planning to break the measures.
The measures dictate that for a wedding, only 20 persons are allowed to attend. More so, receptions are prohibited.
Pictures of the couple and their family in the stadium have since went viral, with many Rwandese condemning the act.
The bride told BBC that it was a horrifying experience for her to spend her wedding night out in the cold, in a stadium.
“The pain and humiliation I’ve gone through are unexplainable. Subjecting people to such humiliation cannot make them fear COVID-19 or follow the measures,” she said.
Rwandan National Police Spokesperson CP John Bosco Kabera said that some people are still not adhering to the COVID-19 containment protocols, promising that police will not accept the behaviour to continue.
