Ruto Ministers to Forgo Their Hefty Salary to Support Drought-stricken Kenyans

Cabinet Secretaries under President Ruto's government will forgo a one-month salary as their contribution to support Kenyans affected by the drought situation, the Cabinet Office has said.

In a meeting held at State House on Tuesday, it was agreed that the CSs were not going to receive a month salary that could be channelled towards helping the drought stricken Kenyans.

"In solidarity with all Kenyans affected by the ongoing drought, the meeting resolved that all Members will forgo one-month salary as their individual and collective contribution towards the ongoing State interventions that support all the Kenyans affected by the drought," the cabinet dispatch said.

During the meeting, it was also noted that the high prices of good commodities such as maize flour ehich needed yo be addressed immediately.

They also said that rather than importing maize as it had been proposed by Trade CS Moses Kuria, local farmers willgbe given the first priority in accessing markets For their maize .

"As part of the long-term measures to address the cyclic drought situation and the cost of living, Cabinet assessed the food supply situation in the country. The meeting noted that the cost of the nation’s staple food, maize, remains unacceptably high currently retailing at between Ksh. 180- 210 for a 2 Kg packet of Maize Flour," the Cabinet dispatch said.

"Cabinet noted that harvesting of maize was ongoing across the country, with this year’s crop estimated to yield about 30 million bags of maize. In honour of our nation’s sacred duty to our farmers, Cabinet resolved that the farmers produce will be accorded priority access to the market."

Through the office of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Kenyans were called upon to assist thd government in cautioning hjnger stricken Kenyans through donations using the PayBill (880990) and bank account (KCB Account 1305486137) which will be used to feed at least 4.3 million Kenyans in the affected 23 counties in the Arid and Semi-Arid areas.
