During the reign of the Ugandan despot, Idi Amin (1971-79), hundreds of Kenyans " disappeared mysteriously while in Uganda.

Otieno Nyambare from Alego worked at Owen Falls Dam at Jinja . He had worked in Uganda for 21 years during which time he had become wealthy.

He had a number of shops in Kenya, a butchery and a bar. One day in 1975 his house was raided by 14 armed men. They ransacked the house taking everything they could lay their hands on. They raped Nyambare's wife and two daughters before beheading him as he tried to defend himself and his family.

Benson Oyugi, from Uyoma location in Siaya district, was a wealthy farmer in Lira, northern Uganda. After Idi Amin took power and went berserk, Oyugi was advised by friends and relatives to leave the country and return to Kenya. But he ignored the advice.

One morning in 1973 his farm was besieged by hundreds of armed soldiers who drove away his livestock and shot him, his wife and three children.

Daniel Ogutu was tortured by Amin's soldiers, forced to eat corpses, but somehow he miraculously escaped death and returned to Kenya.

1975 Kungu Karumba travelled to Uganda on business. He had been to Uganda before because his business involved import and export. However on this particular trip, he disappeared ,never to be heard again.

Another Kenya who disappeared just after Karumba’s dissapearance was Andrew Adi’ng Opiyo ,a journalist working for the East African Standard .Opiyo was a good friend of Idi Amin .In fact they had both married from the same family in the Busoga region of Uganda .

He had gone to Uganda to visit his in laws and friends. According to his widow he was later arrested and tortured at Luzira prison where he died.

In march 1976 Esther Chesire a Kenyan student at Makerere was arrested at Entebbe Airport by the Uganda intelligence agents just before she boarded a flight to Nairobi .She had been booked on the flight with her friend and fellow Kenyan Sally Githere. Chesire was never seen again.

The same year Onyango Amoth a Kenyan working for the East African Community in Tororo was killed by Ugandan soldiers reportedly looking for another Kenyan Dr RJ Onyango who was the medical superintendent of Tororo District Hospital and also the director of East African Trypanosomiasis research organisation based in Tororo.8
