The Obama family is mourning the death of yet another loved one Keziah Aoko Obama.
Keziah, who was the step-mother of former US President Barack Obama, passed away on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at a UK hospital.
The deceased is the mother of Obama’s half-siblings Auma Obama, Malik Obama, and Abo Obama. She died at the age of 81.
Auma Obama said, “Lost my beloved mother yesterday. I’m numb."
Her death comes two weeks after the burial of the family’s matriarch Sarah Obama, who died at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu on March 29th aged 99.
Sarah, the grandmother of Barack Obama, was laid to rest at her home in Kogelo, Siaya County on March 30th in line with Muslim traditions.
Only family members and a few guests, including Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Rachelle Omamo, ICT PS Jerome Ochieng, Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga, and his Kisumu counterpart Anyang Nyong’o, attended the funeral.
Sarah will be remembered for her philanthropic work, which saw her initiate many community development projects in her village.
President Kenyatta eulogized the nonagenarian as an icon of family values and a philanthropist whose contribution to the country's progress shall be dearly missed.
“The passing away of Mama Sarah is a big blow to our nation. We’ve lost a strong, virtuous woman. A matriarch who held together the Obama family and was an icon of family values,” Uhuru said in a message of condolence.
