Construction works on Kirigiti Stadium in Kiambu County stands at 30% cent in only 10 months since the contractor was awarded the project.

Leading a high powered delegation of Principal Secretaries from the National Development Technical Committee (NDITC) projects assessment in the county, Kiambu County commissioner Mr. Wilson revealed the report and expressed satisfaction at the speed with which the contractor had gone.

“The contractor is a very committed person and when you visit the site even without notice, you will find work going on in all sectors,” said Mr. Wilson.

The stadium is one of the oldest sporting and social facility in Kiambu County. The Stadium was originally constructed by the colonial government as cricket grounds. Plans were at an advanced stage to upgrade Kirigiti Stadium to a world-class facility through partnerships with the central government and private organisations.

Sh 140m was allocated for phase one of the project in 2016, with Frema General Contractors Ltd awarded the project. However construction works stalled with nothing tangible to show for the money spent other than an unfinished concrete.

Built to international level
CS Amina Mohammed said that the 16,000 capacity stadium will be built to international level. It will have two basketball courts, a swimming pool and an amphitheatre, netball and volleyball courts, a football pitch and an athletics track. Governor Nyoro commended the project and said that the stadium will help decongest stadiums in Nairobi.

“The stadium has led to opening up of roads within Kiambu and it will be beneficial to the county. The county government has also injected money to rehabilitate grounds in all 60 wards, even the public grounds that are shared with schools,” said Governor Nyoro.

The National Government released Sh 590m for rehabilitation of the stadium and is expected to be complete in seven months. The CS promised that the youths will be given priority in dishing out jobs during the construction of the stadium.
