Boda Boda Riders Storm Karatina Hospital Killing Two Suspected Thieves

A mob of Boda Boda riders on Thursday night, March 11, stormed Karatina Hospital, dragged three patients outside the health facility and killed two of them as police officers watched helplessly. – By John Mutiso.

The riders alluded that the two, who were patients at Karatina Hospital were behind the killings of six of their colleagues in the region. The suspects who had earlier been rescued and taken to the hospital were lynched and their bodies set on fire as police authorities watched in dismay.
The mob is said to have overpowered the security manning the hospital as well as police officers who were guarding the patients.
“They managed to do this unlawful act after overpowering our officers. However, we have managed to save one of the suspects who is currently being treated,” said Mathira East Police Boss James Barasa.

In January, the National Police Service vowed to crack down on boda boda riders for taking the law in their hands. The Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai put rogue boda boda operators on notice over rising cases of hooliganism involving the riders. He said that he had received numerous complaints where boda boda riders had assaulted civilians and in some cases, burnt their vehicles.
In a statement, Mutyambai said the culture of impunity and lawlessness among boda boda operators was worrying.
“Recent incidents indicate that victims of accidents where boda boda riders are involved have been assaulted and in some instances, their vehicles burnt, I caution all boda boda riders and operators against uncouth and uncivilised manner of addressing issues.” said Mutyambai.
